Emporia Telecom Produktions- und Vertriebs GesmbH & Co. KG is a telecommunications group headquartered in Linz, Austria.
The company mainly produces mobile phones and mobile phone accessories for the elderly (senior citizens' handsets). The Group is also the only provider of this sector to be registered by the Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GfK). In Austria Emporia achieves a market share of 16 percent in prepaid mobile phones. Products are marketed in 30 countries. In Germany, Emporia phones are available from all major network operators. The manufacturer works internationally with Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Orange. Emporia was founded in 1991 and specializes in simple telephony with special attention to seniors. The owners and managing directors are Albert Fellner and Eveline Pupeter. The Group employs around 130 people and implemented around 50 million euros in 30 countries in 2009.
Albert Fellner founded Emporia in 1991. Since 2003, Eveline Pupeter has been a member of the management board of the family business. It is responsible for the European business, marketing, strategy and personnel. Emporia currently sells its mobile phones in 30 countries in Central and Northern Europe, in Israel, Canada and Cyprus as well as in the USA.
Emporia's target group is older and often physically impaired people. The most frequent aging phenomena such as restricted vision, motor skills and hearing are taken into account in mobile phone development. Research co-operation on further development exists, among other things, with the universities in Linz, the Fachhochschulen Oberösterreichs, Aachen and Cambridge. Every fourth employee at Emporia is employed in the R & D department.
The very large display of all devices ensures a better readability. This is also improved by a magnifying function. In addition, all Emporia products are equipped with hearing aid compatible speakers. The Emporia mobile phones display light is suitable for people with visual impairment (eg people with cataract). Due to the special color (black on orange) they do not feel any pain when looking at them. Many devices are equipped with the "Emporia emergency button", which makes it possible to quickly make an emergency call. The latest mobile telephones from emporia are equipped with GPS and a case sensor. With this technology, an emergency call is automatically sent after a fall and the current position is transmitted by SMS.
The sales markets include Europe, Latin America and Hong Kong. In 2011 Emporia was listed at Vodafone Global, after the product emporia RL1 was developed together with Vodafone Germany. This
device and the successor model emporia RL2 are available in Germany, Spain, the UK, Italy, Ireland and Hungary as well as with the partners of Vodafone in Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and
Croatia. In addition, emporia is available in numerous countries in various countries, among others. At T-Mobile, A1 and Tele.ring in Austria, at TIM and Vodafone in Italy, at Vodafone in the
United Kingdom or at Vodafone in Spain. The American public was presented for the first time at the international Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from 10 to 13 January 2011. In time
for the start of the test, the Emporia CLICK and the Emporia SOLID plus were adapted for the US market.
On June 12, 2012, the sales start of the Emporia ELEGANCE plus took place together with the network provider SmarTone. In the special economic zone, the trend towards ease of use is growing.
Emporia Telecom is now the global market and technology leader in the "Senior Handys" division.
Emporia often carries out activities with or for seniors. For example, in cooperation with the German Senior Citizens' League, the company called the "Ideenwettbewerb" simple telephone calls into life. Apart from the initiators, the members of the jury also include representatives of Deutsche Telekom, RWTH Aachen University and the Academy of Art and Design Hall. The winning entries of the first competition are a "business card button", which allows you to see the name, address and patient data of the owner, as well as a "mobile phone reminder" warning the owner of the apartment without his mobile phone . The model "SPhone" was also honored, a mobile phone reminiscent of a classic telephone receiver. The ideas of the winners will be examined by Emporia and will later be integrated into the product development.
Emporia has already received numerous prestigious awards for its products. The emporia LIFE plus has already been awarded the Austrian National Innovation Award and the special award of the Federal Chancellor's Office for barrier-free IT. The emporia ELEGANCE has received all the major design awards. These include the Plus X Award, the Universal Design Award, the Consumer Favorite Award and the iF Design Award in Gold. Here the emporia ELEGANCE stood on a par with the iPhone. The new models can already look forward to the first awards; The emporia SOLID plus through the Plus X Award and the iF Design Award, the emporia CLICK over the Universal Design Award and the Plus X Award in the categories "Best Product of the Year 2012" and "Operating Comfort and Functionality".
